Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the VP of Corporate Tax Strategy will serve as a key member of the senior finance leadership team. You will be the organization’s primary tax advisor, providing critical insights on mergers and acquisitions, new product launches, international expansion, and capital structure. Key Responsibilities of VP, Corporate Tax Strategy with a Public FinTech – Charlotte, NC
The Vice President of Corporate Tax Strategy will have a broad and impactful range of responsibilities, including but not limited to:
Global Tax Strategy & Planning
Develop, implement, and continuously refine the company’s global tax strategy to align with its business objectives, minimize tax liabilities, and manage risk effectively. Proactively identify and execute tax planning opportunities related to domestic and international operations.
M&A and Corporate Development
Lead all tax aspects of mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, and other strategic transactions. This includes conducting tax due diligence, structuring transactions in a tax-efficient manner, and overseeing post-acquisition tax integration.
Tax Provision & Reporting
Oversee the quarterly and annual global income tax provision process in accordance with ASC 740. Ensure accurate calculation of the effective tax rate, deferred tax assets/liabilities, and valuation allowances, and manage the related financial statement disclosures.
Compliance Oversight
Manage the company’s global tax compliance function, ensuring the timely and accurate filing of all federal, state, local, and international income and indirect tax returns. Supervise the work of internal teams and external service providers.
Legislative Monitoring
Proactively monitor, analyze, and communicate the impact of proposed and enacted tax legislation and regulations on the company’s operations and financial position. Develop strategies to adapt to the changing tax landscape.
Tax Controversy Management
Serve as the primary point of contact for all tax audits and inquiries from tax authorities globally. Develop and implement strategies to effectively defend the company’s tax positions and manage tax controversies to a successful resolution.
Team Leadership & Development
Build, lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing corporate tax team. Foster a culture of collaboration, technical excellence, and continuous improvement.
Executive Advisory
Act as the key tax advisor to the executive leadership team, the Board of Directors, and other senior stakeholders. Translate complex tax concepts into clear, actionable business advice.
Transfer Pricing
Develop, implement, and maintain a global transfer pricing policy that is compliant with OECD guidelines and local country regulations. Oversee the preparation of all required documentation.
Internal Controls
Design, implement, and maintain effective tax-related internal controls to ensure compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) 404 requirements.
Process Improvement & Technology
Drive initiatives to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the tax function through process optimization and the adoption of new tax technologies.
Requirements for the VP, Corporate Tax Strategy with a Public FinTech – Charlotte, NC
We are seeking a seasoned and accomplished tax leader with a proven track record of success in complex, multinational environments. The specific qualifications for this role are:
Educational Background:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a closely related field is required.
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is mandatory.
- An advanced degree, such as a Master’s in Taxation (MST), Juris Doctor (JD), or Master of Laws (LLM) in Taxation, is highly preferred.
Professional Experience:
- A minimum of 15 years of progressive corporate tax experience, with a clear trajectory of increasing responsibility.
- At least 5-7 years in a senior leadership role, managing a global tax function for a complex organization.
- Deep experience within a U.S. publicly traded, multinational corporation is essential.
- A foundational background in a “Big 4” public accounting firm is strongly desired.
- Direct industry experience in FinTech, financial services, or a high-growth technology company is a significant advantage.
- Demonstrable experience leading tax strategy for M&A, international tax planning, and transfer pricing.
Technical Skills & Competencies:
- Mastery of U.S. federal, state, and international corporate tax law.
- Expert-level knowledge of accounting for income taxes under ASC 740, including complex topics such as stock-based compensation, uncertain tax positions (FIN 48), business combinations, and valuation allowances.
- Strong understanding of transfer pricing principles, BEPS, and other international tax frameworks.
- Proficiency with tax research platforms and familiarity with corporate tax software and ERP systems.
