Role Overview for VP, Corporate Controller with a Public Retailer – Los Angeles, CA
The Vice President, Corporate Controller is a key member of the senior finance leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This individual will be responsible for leading all aspects of the company’s accounting functions, including financial reporting, technical accounting, accounting operations, and internal controls.
The ideal candidate is a hands-on yet strategic leader with extensive experience in a publicly-traded environment, preferably within the retail or consumer products industry. You will be instrumental in ensuring the accuracy and timeliness of financial statements, complying with all regulatory requirements (SEC, GAAP, SOX), and driving process improvements to enhance efficiency and scalability.
This role requires a leader who can not only manage the day-to-day accounting operations but also serve as a trusted business partner to executive leadership, providing critical financial insights to support strategic decision-making. You will oversee a large, multi-layered team and be responsible for their professional development, mentorship, and performance.
Key Responsibilities of VP, Corporate Controller with a Public Retailer – Los Angeles, CA
Leadership & Team Management
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing global accounting team. Foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, continuous improvement, and accountability. Structure the department for optimal efficiency and scalability as the company grows.
SEC Financial Reporting
Oversee the entire external reporting process, including the accurate and timely filing of Forms 10-K, 10-Q, 8-K, and the annual proxy statement. Ensure all disclosures are in full compliance with U.S. GAAP and SEC regulations. Manage the external audit relationship and oversee the quarterly review and annual audit processes.
Technical Accounting Expertise
Serve as the company’s primary subject matter expert on complex technical accounting matters. Research, interpret, and implement new accounting standards and pronouncements (ASUs). Provide guidance on accounting for complex transactions such as mergers and acquisitions, new debt/equity financing, revenue recognition (ASC 606), and lease accounting (ASC 842).
Accounting Operations
Direct all day-to-day accounting operations, including the monthly, quarterly, and year-end financial close processes. Oversee general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, fixed assets, inventory accounting, and intercompany transactions.
Internal Controls & SOX Compliance
Maintain and enhance a robust internal control environment in compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX). Oversee the design, implementation, and testing of internal controls over financial reporting. Liaise with internal audit and external auditors on all SOX-related matters.
Process Improvement & System Optimization
Proactively identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes, enhance accuracy, and improve efficiency. Lead initiatives to optimize the use of the company’s ERP system (e.g., SAP, Oracle) and other financial software to support business growth and reporting requirements.
Strategic Business Partnership
Collaborate closely with the CFO, FP&A team, and other business leaders to provide financial insights and support strategic initiatives. Participate in the budgeting and forecasting process.
Treasury and Tax Coordination
Oversee key treasury functions, including cash management, forecasting, and banking relationships. Partner with the VP of Tax to ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax regulations and to support tax planning strategies.
Board & Audit Committee Interaction
Prepare and present financial information and accounting updates to the Audit Committee of the Board of Directors, ensuring they are kept fully informed of key issues.
Requirements for the VP, Corporate Controller with a Public Retailer – Los Angeles, CA
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required. An active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license is mandatory. An MBA or Master’s degree is highly preferred.
Professional Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, with at least 5-7 years in a senior leadership role (e.g., Corporate Controller, Assistant Controller) within a publicly-traded company.
Industry Background
Experience in the retail, CPG, or e-commerce industries is strongly preferred. A deep understanding of retail-specific accounting issues such as inventory valuation, loyalty programs, and gift card accounting is a significant asset.
Public Accounting Foundation
A background in a ‘Big 4’ or large national public accounting firm is highly desirable.
Technical Proficiency
Extensive and in-depth knowledge of U.S. GAAP, Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) compliance, and the rigorous SEC reporting requirements. Proven experience in researching and documenting complex technical accounting issues.
Systems Acumen
Hands-on experience with large-scale ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics 365) is required. Proficiency with financial reporting and consolidation tools is also necessary.
Leadership Skills
Demonstrated ability to lead, manage, and motivate a large, diverse team. A track record of developing talent and building scalable, high-performing accounting organizations.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. The ability to articulate complex financial concepts to a non-financial audience. Proven ability to build strong relationships and collaborate effectively with executive leadership, board members, and external partners.
