Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the SVP, Head of Retail Banking will be a key architect of the bank’s future growth and customer engagement strategy. This individual will have complete oversight of the branch network, digital banking channels, consumer lending, product development, and overall customer experience. The ideal candidate is a dynamic leader with a proven track record of driving profitable growth, fostering a high-performance sales and service culture, and navigating the evolving landscape of digital banking.

Key Responsibilities of SVP, Head of Retail Banking with a Mid-Market Bank – St. Louis, MO

Strategic Leadership and Vision

Develop, articulate, and execute a comprehensive retail banking strategy that aligns with the bank’s overall objectives. Identify and capitalize on new market opportunities for deposit gathering, loan growth, and fee income generation to expand market share in the St. Louis metropolitan area and beyond.

Financial Performance and P&L Management

Assume full P&L responsibility for the retail banking division. Develop and manage annual budgets, forecasts, and key performance indicators (KPIs). Drive revenue growth, manage expenses, and ensure the division meets or exceeds profitability targets. Regularly analyze financial reports to identify trends, challenges, and opportunities, implementing corrective actions as needed.

Sales and Service Excellence

Cultivate a proactive, customer-centric sales and service culture across all retail channels. Design and implement effective sales management routines, incentive programs, and coaching frameworks to maximize team performance. Champion initiatives that enhance the customer journey and drive industry-leading levels of customer satisfaction and loyalty.

Digital Transformation and Innovation

Lead the charge in advancing the bank’s digital capabilities. Oversee the strategy for online banking, mobile banking, and other digital platforms. Evaluate and implement innovative fintech solutions to improve customer experience, increase efficiency, and maintain a competitive edge. Drive digital adoption and engagement among the bank’s customer base.

Product Management and Development

Direct the lifecycle of all retail banking products and services, including checking and savings accounts, CDs, consumer loans, residential mortgages, and credit cards. Conduct market analysis to ensure product offerings are competitive, relevant, and profitable. Oversee product pricing, marketing campaigns, and promotional strategies.

Operational Excellence and Risk Management

Ensure the entire retail banking operation runs efficiently, effectively, and in full compliance with bank policies and regulatory requirements. Develop and refine processes to enhance operational workflows and mitigate risk. Maintain a deep understanding of the evolving regulatory environment and ensure strict adherence to all aspects of regulatory compliance, including BSA/AML, Fair Lending, and consumer protection laws.

Team Leadership and Talent Development

Provide strong, inspirational leadership to a large and diverse team of regional managers, branch managers, and support staff. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performance work environment. Oversee talent acquisition, performance management, succession planning, and leadership development programs to build a robust talent pipeline for the future.

Community Engagement and Leadership

Serve as a prominent representative of the bank within the St. Louis community. Actively participate in community events, build relationships with local business leaders and organizations, and uphold the bank’s commitment to corporate social responsibility. Ensure the bank effectively meets its obligations under the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA).

Professional Experience

A minimum of fifteen (15) years of progressive leadership experience within the retail banking sector. At least seven (7) years of experience in a senior executive role (e.g., Director of Retail, Regional President) with direct P&L responsibility for a significant retail banking division or region.

Educational Background

A Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Economics, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree from an accredited institution is highly preferred.

Strategic Acumen

Demonstrated ability to develop and execute successful business strategies that result in measurable growth in deposits, loans, and profitability. Experience in market analysis, strategic planning, and competitive positioning.

Financial Expertise

Deep understanding of financial statements, budgeting, forecasting, and profitability analysis. Proven ability to manage a complex P&L and make data-driven decisions to optimize financial performance.

Digital Fluency

Strong knowledge of current and emerging trends in digital banking, payments, and financial technology. Proven experience leading or significantly contributing to digital transformation initiatives.

Leadership and Management Skills

Exceptional leadership qualities with the ability to inspire, motivate, and develop large teams. A track record of building high-performing teams and fostering a positive and productive work culture.

Regulatory Knowledge

Comprehensive knowledge of the banking regulatory landscape, including rules and guidance from the FDIC, OCC, and CFPB. Experience managing regulatory relationships and ensuring a culture of compliance.

Communication Skills

Superior written, verbal, and presentation skills. The ability to communicate complex information clearly and persuasively to a variety of audiences, including the Board of Directors, executive peers, employees, and community members.

Location

Must be currently residing in or willing to relocate to the St. Louis, MO metropolitan area. Active involvement in the local community is strongly desired.
