Key Responsibilities of Chief Medical Officer – Los Angeles, CA
The Chief Medical Officer will assume a broad range of responsibilities, providing strategic direction and hands-on execution across all clinical and medical functions of the organization.
Strategic Clinical Leadership
- Develop, articulate, and execute the long-term clinical vision and strategy for the company’s entire product portfolio.
- Design and oversee the execution of all clinical trials, from early feasibility studies to large-scale pivotal trials and post-market registries, ensuring they are conducted with the highest scientific and ethical standards.
- Lead the development of robust evidence generation plans to support regulatory submissions, reimbursement strategies, and marketing claims.
- Provide critical clinical insights to the executive leadership team and Board of Directors to inform corporate strategy, M&A activities, and long-range planning.
- Stay abreast of evolving clinical landscapes, competitive technologies, and standards of care to ensure the company’s strategy remains innovative and relevant.
Medical Safety and Risk Management
- Serve as the ultimate authority on patient safety, establishing and overseeing a robust medical safety and pharmacovigilance framework.
- Lead the clinical evaluation of all safety data and signals, managing the company’s response to adverse events and ensuring timely reporting to regulatory authorities.
- Chair the company’s medical safety review board and provide clinical leadership for all risk management activities throughout the product lifecycle.
- Ensure all clinical activities adhere to Good Clinical Practice (GCP), international guidelines, and company SOPs.
Regulatory Affairs Collaboration
- Partner closely with the Head of Regulatory Affairs to develop and execute global regulatory strategies for new products and product modifications.
- Provide essential clinical leadership and input for all regulatory submissions, including IDEs, PMAs, 510(k)s, and CE Marking applications.
- Serve as the primary clinical representative in interactions with regulatory bodies, including the FDA, Notified Bodies, and other international health authorities.
- Ensure that all clinical data and documentation meet the stringent requirements set forth by the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH) and other global agencies.
Product Development and Innovation
- Act as the clinical champion within the product development process, providing expert medical input from initial concept through design, verification, validation, and launch.
- Collaborate with R&D and engineering teams to define clinical requirements for new products and ensure they are designed to meet the needs of patients and clinicians.
- Lead clinical due diligence for potential technology acquisitions, partnerships, and licensing opportunities.
Medical Affairs and External Engagement
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with global Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), clinical investigators, and professional societies.
- Oversee the development and execution of the company’s publication strategy to disseminate clinical data in peer-reviewed journals and at major medical conferences.
- Act as the company’s lead medical spokesperson, representing the organization at scientific congresses, investor meetings, and with the media.
- Direct the Medical Science Liaison (MSL) team and ensure the development of accurate and compelling medical education materials.
Requirements for the Chief Medical Officer – Los Angeles, CA
We are seeking a highly credentialed and experienced leader who meets the following qualifications:
Educational and Professional Qualifications
- Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree is required.
- Board certification in a relevant medical specialty is strongly preferred.
- An active, unrestricted medical license in at least one U.S. state.
- An advanced degree such as an MBA, MPH, or PhD is highly desirable.
Required Experience
- A minimum of 15 years of combined experience in clinical practice and the life sciences industry.
- A minimum of 10 years of progressive leadership experience within the medical device, diagnostics, or biopharmaceutical industry, with a strong preference for medical device experience.
- At least 5 years of experience in a senior leadership role (e.g., Vice President, Senior Medical Director) with direct management responsibility for a clinical or medical affairs team.
- Demonstrated experience designing and executing clinical trials for medical devices, particularly Class II and Class III devices.
- Proven track record of successful interactions with the FDA and other global regulatory agencies, including direct involvement in product submissions and approvals.
- Experience in both pre-market and post-market environments, including clinical development, medical safety, and lifecycle management.
