Key Responsibilities of Plant Manager (Tier 1 Auto) – Detroit, MI

  • Strategic Leadership & P&L Management: Develop and execute the plant’s strategic plan in alignment with corporate objectives, overseeing the entire profit and loss (P&L) statement, budget development, forecasting, and financial performance to ensure sustainable growth and profitability.
  • Operational Excellence & Continuous Improvement: Champion a culture of lean manufacturing, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement (Kaizen events, 5S, Value Stream Mapping) to optimize processes, reduce waste, enhance efficiency, and drive productivity across all production lines.
  • Production & Quality Assurance: Direct and coordinate all manufacturing activities to ensure production schedules are met, product quality standards (including IATF 16949 compliance) are consistently achieved, and customer delivery expectations are exceeded.
  • Team Leadership & Development: Recruit, develop, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of manufacturing professionals, fostering a collaborative and engaging work environment that promotes safety, professional growth, and accountability.
  • Safety & Environmental Compliance: Ensure strict adherence to all local, state, and federal safety regulations and environmental guidelines, promoting a proactive safety culture and implementing robust EHS programs to maintain a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Supply Chain & Inventory Management: Oversee raw material procurement, inventory levels, logistics, and supply chain relationships to ensure optimal material flow, minimize costs, and prevent production interruptions.
  • Maintenance & Asset Management: Direct maintenance activities to ensure optimal operational efficiency of all machinery, equipment, and facilities, implementing preventative maintenance programs to minimize downtime and extend asset life.
  • New Product Introduction (NPI): Collaborate with engineering, R&D, and sales teams to successfully launch new products, ensuring seamless integration into manufacturing processes and adherence to quality and cost targets.
  • Customer & Stakeholder Relations: Serve as a primary point of contact for key customers, addressing concerns, fostering strong relationships, and ensuring their requirements are met or exceeded. Interface effectively with corporate leadership and external auditors.
  • Technology & Automation Integration: Identify, evaluate, and implement new manufacturing technologies, automation solutions, and industry 4.0 initiatives to enhance productivity, quality, and competitiveness.
  • Cost Reduction Initiatives: Continuously identify opportunities for cost reduction through process improvements, waste elimination, energy efficiency, and effective resource utilization without compromising quality or safety.
  • Reporting & Analysis: Prepare and present detailed operational reports, performance metrics, and financial summaries to senior management, providing insights and recommendations for strategic decision-making.

Requirements for the Plant Manager (Tier 1 Auto) – Detroit, MI

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Manufacturing), Operations Management, or a related technical field is required. A Master’s degree (MBA or equivalent) is highly preferred.
  • Experience: A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience in a high-volume manufacturing environment, with at least 5-7 years specifically in a Plant Manager or General Manager role within the Tier 1 automotive supply sector.
  • Automotive Industry Expertise: Deep understanding and hands-on experience with automotive manufacturing processes, quality systems (e.g., IATF 16949), and industry-specific challenges and regulations.
  • Lean Manufacturing & Continuous Improvement: Demonstrated expertise and certification (e.g., Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt) in lean manufacturing principles, Kaizen, 5S, SMED, Value Stream Mapping, and other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Financial Acumen: Proven experience managing a full P&L, developing and adhering to budgets, implementing cost control measures, and driving financial performance within a manufacturing plant.
  • Leadership & Team Development: Exceptional leadership skills with a track record of building, motivating, and developing high-performing teams, fostering a positive work culture, and effectively managing performance.
  • Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of manufacturing technologies, automation, ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle), and data analysis tools to drive operational efficiency.
  • Problem-Solving & Decision-Making: Superior analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a data-driven approach to decision-making and a capacity to navigate complex operational challenges.
  • Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization, customers, and external stakeholders.
