Key Responsibilities of Director of Quality (AS 9100)
The Director of Quality (AS 9100) will be tasked with a comprehensive set of responsibilities critical to maintaining and elevating our client’s quality standing in the aerospace industry. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Strategic Quality Leadership & AS9100 Compliance
Develop, implement, and continuously improve the organization’s Quality Management System (QMS) in strict accordance with AS9100 Rev D, ISO 9001, and other relevant aerospace standards. Lead all internal and external QMS audits, including those from customers, regulatory bodies (e.g., FAA, EASA), and certification registrars, ensuring successful outcomes and maintaining certifications.
Team Leadership & Development
Recruit, mentor, coach, and lead a high-performing team of quality engineers, inspectors, and technicians. Foster a collaborative, data-driven, and proactive quality culture that empowers team members to identify and resolve quality issues efficiently and effectively.
Continuous Improvement & Process Optimization
Champion the implementation and sustainment of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies across all operational processes. Drive root cause analysis (RCA) for non-conformances, implement robust corrective and preventive actions (CAPA), and monitor their effectiveness to prevent recurrence.
Supplier Quality Management
Establish and oversee comprehensive supplier quality programs, including supplier qualification, performance monitoring, and regular audits. Collaborate with procurement to ensure that all incoming materials and services meet stringent quality requirements and aerospace industry specifications.
Regulatory & Customer Compliance
Ensure all products and processes comply with applicable national and international aerospace regulations, standards, and customer-specific requirements. Act as the primary point of contact for all quality-related regulatory inquiries and customer audits.
Product Quality Assurance
Oversee all aspects of product quality throughout the entire product lifecycle, from design and development through manufacturing, assembly, test, and delivery. Implement robust inspection plans, statistical process control (SPC), and final product acceptance criteria.
Data Analysis & Reporting
Utilize advanced statistical tools and QMS software to collect, analyze, and interpret quality performance data. Generate comprehensive reports on key quality metrics (e.g., defect rates, scrap, rework, on-time delivery quality) for executive leadership, identifying trends and recommending strategic improvements.
Risk Management
Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate quality-related risks associated with product design, manufacturing processes, and supply chain activities. Implement robust risk mitigation strategies to ensure product safety and reliability.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Partner closely with Engineering, Production, Supply Chain, and Program Management teams to integrate quality requirements into all phases of product development and manufacturing, ensuring a seamless flow of quality processes.
Budget Management
Develop and manage the quality department budget, optimizing resource allocation to achieve quality objectives while maintaining cost-effectiveness.
Requirements for the Director of Quality (AS 9100)
To be considered for this challenging yet rewarding position, candidates must demonstrate a proven track record of excellence and possess the following qualifications:
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial), Quality Management, or a closely related technical field from an accredited institution is required. A Master’s degree or MBA is highly preferred.
Experience
A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in Quality leadership roles within the aerospace, defense, or a highly regulated precision manufacturing environment. This must include at least 5 years of direct, hands-on experience in implementing, maintaining, and auditing Quality Management Systems specifically compliant with AS9100 Rev D.
Certifications
AS9100 Lead Auditor certification from an accredited training body is highly preferred. Additional certifications such as ASQ Certified Manager of Quality/Organizational Excellence (CMQ/OE), Certified Quality Engineer (CQE), or Six Sigma Black Belt are a significant advantage.
Technical Acumen
Deep expertise in Quality Management System principles, tools, and methodologies, including SPC, FMEA, APQP/PPAP, MSA, 8D problem-solving, and root cause analysis. Proficiency with various QMS software platforms and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems.
Regulatory Knowledge
Comprehensive understanding of relevant aerospace industry regulations and standards, including but not limited to FAA (e.g., FARs), EASA, ITAR, DFARS, and customer-specific requirements (e.g., Boeing, Airbus).
Leadership & Communication Skills
Exceptional leadership capabilities with a proven ability to build, motivate, and develop high-performing teams. Outstanding verbal and written communication skills, capable of effectively presenting complex quality data and strategies to all levels of the organization, from shop floor personnel to executive leadership and external stakeholders.

Strong analytical and critical thinking abilities, with a demonstrated capacity to solve complex technical and organizational quality challenges using data-driven approaches.
