Key Responsibilities of Director of Logistics (Rail Trucking)
Strategic Planning & Development
Develop and execute comprehensive logistics strategies for rail and trucking operations that align with the company’s overall business objectives. This includes long-term capacity planning, network optimization, and identifying opportunities for service expansion and cost reduction.
Operational Management & Efficiency
Oversee the day-to-day operations of all rail and trucking logistics activities. This encompasses route optimization, scheduling, load planning, and ensuring timely and accurate delivery. Implement and monitor operational KPIs to drive efficiency and service excellence.
Carrier & Vendor Relationship Management
Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with rail carriers, trucking companies, 3PL providers, and other logistics partners. Negotiate contracts, service level agreements (SLAs), and pricing to ensure competitive rates and reliable service. Regularly evaluate carrier performance and conduct business reviews.
Team Leadership & Development
Recruit, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of logistics professionals. Foster a collaborative and results-driven environment, promoting professional growth and development. Conduct performance reviews and provide ongoing coaching and feedback.
Budget & Financial Management
Develop, manage, and monitor departmental budgets. Identify cost-saving opportunities, analyze freight expenditures, and implement strategies to improve financial performance and profitability within the rail and trucking segments.
Technology & Systems Optimization
Champion the adoption and optimization of logistics technologies, including Transportation Management Systems (TMS), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems, and other supply chain software. Leverage data analytics to gain insights, improve decision-making, and enhance operational visibility.
Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure strict adherence to all relevant transportation regulations (DOT, FMCSA, FRA), safety standards, and company policies. Develop and implement risk mitigation strategies to address potential disruptions in the supply chain, including weather events, capacity shortages, and regulatory changes. A deep understanding of American Association of Railroads guidelines and best practices for rail freight operations is essential.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting
Establish and track key performance indicators (KPIs) for rail and trucking logistics. Generate regular reports on operational performance, cost efficiency, service levels, and other relevant metrics for senior leadership. Utilize data to identify trends and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
Cross-functional Collaboration
Collaborate effectively with internal departments such as Sales, Procurement, Warehousing, IT, and Customer Service to ensure integrated supply chain solutions and seamless execution. Act as the primary subject matter expert for rail and trucking logistics within the organization.
Customer Service Excellence
Work closely with the customer service team to address client inquiries, resolve issues, and ensure high levels of customer satisfaction through reliable and efficient logistics services. Anticipate customer needs and proactively develop solutions.
Requirements for the Director of Logistics (Rail Trucking)
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree (MBA, MS in Supply Chain) is highly preferred.
Experience
A minimum of 10-12 years of progressive experience in logistics and supply chain management, with at least 5-7 years in a leadership or senior management role specifically overseeing rail and trucking operations. Proven experience with intermodal transportation is critical.
Industry Knowledge
Deep understanding of the North American freight market, including rail freight networks, trucking regulations, and industry best practices. Familiarity with HazMat regulations and cross-border logistics (US-Canada/Mexico) is a plus.
Technical Proficiency
Expert-level proficiency with Transportation Management Systems (TMS), ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle), and advanced data analytics tools. Ability to leverage technology to optimize logistics processes.
