Key Responsibilities of Director of Import Export
Strategic Planning & Development
Develop, implement, and manage comprehensive import and export strategies aligned with the company’s global business objectives. Identify opportunities for process improvements, cost reductions, and enhanced efficiency across the entire international supply chain.
Regulatory Compliance & Risk Management
Ensure strict adherence to all international trade laws and regulations, including customs regulations (HTS classification, valuation, country of origin), export controls (EAR, ITAR, OFAC), Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), and other relevant government agency requirements. Develop and maintain robust compliance programs, conduct regular audits, and implement corrective actions as needed to mitigate risks.
Operational Excellence & Process Optimization
Oversee and optimize all aspects of import and export operations, from order placement to final delivery. Streamline processes for customs clearance, freight forwarding, and documentation to ensure timely and cost-effective movement of goods. Implement best practices for inventory management in transit and warehousing.
Team Leadership & Development
Recruit, train, mentor, and manage a high-performing team of import/export professionals. Foster a collaborative and results-driven environment, ensuring professional growth and continuous learning within the department. Set performance goals and conduct regular evaluations.
Vendor & Broker Management
Select, negotiate with, and manage relationships with customs brokers, freight forwarders, carriers, and other third-party logistics (3PL) providers. Monitor service levels, ensure competitive pricing, and drive accountability to achieve operational targets.
Technology & Systems Implementation
Evaluate, recommend, and implement trade compliance software and other technological solutions to enhance efficiency, accuracy, and reporting capabilities for import/export activities. Ensure effective integration with existing ERP and supply chain systems.
Cost Management & Budgeting
Develop and manage the import/export department budget, identifying cost-saving opportunities without compromising compliance or service levels. Analyze freight costs, duties, taxes, and other associated expenses to optimize financial performance.
Reporting & Analytics
Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) for import/export operations and generate regular reports for senior management. Analyze data to identify trends, pinpoint areas for improvement, and inform strategic decision-making.
Cross-functional Collaboration
Collaborate closely with internal departments such as Sales, Procurement, Legal, Finance, and Production to ensure seamless integration of import/export activities with overall business operations. Provide expert guidance on trade-related matters.
Trade Program Management
Oversee the utilization of special trade programs such as Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), duty drawback, and bonded warehousing to optimize duty payments and enhance competitiveness. Stay informed on changes to global trade policies and their potential impact.
Incoterms Expertise
Provide expert guidance and training on Incoterms® rules to internal teams, ensuring proper application in contracts and logistics operations to clarify responsibilities and costs between buyers and sellers in international trade.
Requirements for the Director of Import Export
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, International Business, Logistics, or a related field. Master’s degree or MBA preferred.
Experience
Minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in import/export operations, international trade compliance, or global logistics, with at least 5-7 years in a leadership or managerial role.
Certifications
Licensed U.S. Customs Broker (LCB) preferred. Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) or Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) a plus.
Technical Knowledge
In-depth knowledge of U.S. Customs regulations, HTS classification, valuation, country of origin rules, export control regulations (EAR, ITAR, OFAC), Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), and other international trade laws.
Software Proficiency
Demonstrated experience with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle), Global Trade Management (GTM) software, and advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, PowerPoint).
Leadership Skills
Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing team. Strong emotional intelligence and ability to inspire confidence and drive results.
