The Director of Fulfillment will be responsible for strategizing, implementing, and overseeing all aspects of the fulfillment lifecycle, from warehousing and inventory management to outbound logistics, last-mile delivery, and returns processing. Key Responsibilities of Director of Fulfillment

The successful Director of Fulfillment will be accountable for a broad range of strategic and operational duties, including but not limited to:

Strategic Leadership & Planning

Develop, implement, and continuously refine comprehensive fulfillment strategies that align with overall business objectives, growth targets, and customer service standards. Forecast future operational needs, capacity planning, and technological requirements.

Operational Management & Optimization

Oversee the daily operations of all fulfillment centers, whether in-house or managed through third-party logistics (3PL) partners. Drive operational excellence across all touchpoints, including receiving, put-away, picking, packing, shipping, and reverse logistics.

Process Improvement & Efficiency

Champion continuous improvement initiatives using methodologies such as Lean, Six Sigma, or other best practices to enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve service levels. Identify bottlenecks and implement innovative solutions to streamline workflows.

Inventory Management

Ensure optimal inventory levels across all fulfillment locations to meet demand while minimizing carrying costs. Implement robust inventory control procedures, conduct regular audits, and leverage forecasting tools to maintain accuracy and prevent stockouts or overstock.

Technology & Systems Integration

Evaluate, select, and implement advanced fulfillment technologies, including Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) integrations. Maximize the utilization of these systems to drive automation and data-driven decision-making.

Logistics & Transportation Management

Manage relationships with a network of carriers and 3PL providers, negotiating contracts, monitoring performance, and ensuring cost-effective and timely delivery solutions. Optimize shipping routes and methods to enhance speed and reduce transportation expenses.

Team Leadership & Development

Recruit, train, mentor, and lead a high-performing team of fulfillment professionals. Foster a positive and productive work environment, promoting professional growth, accountability, and a strong customer-centric mindset.

Budget Management

Develop and manage the fulfillment department’s budget, controlling operational expenses, labor costs, and capital expenditures. Analyze financial data to identify cost-saving opportunities and ensure budgetary compliance.

Performance Monitoring & Reporting

Establish, monitor, and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as order accuracy, on-time shipping, delivery speed, cost per order, and customer satisfaction. Use data analytics to identify trends, diagnose issues, and inform strategic adjustments.

Compliance & Safety

Ensure all fulfillment operations comply with relevant industry regulations, safety standards, and company policies. Promote a culture of safety and continuous training to minimize workplace incidents.

Vendor & Partner Management

Cultivate strong relationships with external vendors, suppliers, and technology partners critical to fulfillment operations, ensuring service level agreements (SLAs) are met and value is consistently delivered.

Customer Experience Focus

Work closely with customer service teams to understand customer feedback related to fulfillment and implement solutions to enhance the overall post-purchase experience.

Strategic Collaboration

Collaborate cross-functionally with Sales, Marketing, Product Development, and IT teams to ensure fulfillment capabilities support new product launches, promotional campaigns, and overall business growth initiatives. A deep understanding of modern supply chain optimization strategies is crucial for success in this collaborative environment.

Requirements for the Director of Fulfillment

To excel in this demanding yet rewarding role, candidates should possess a robust blend of educational background, extensive experience, and critical leadership competencies:

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Operations Management, Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, or a closely related field is required. A Master’s degree (MBA or MS in Supply Chain/Logistics) is highly preferred and will be a significant advantage.

Experience

A minimum of 10-12 years of progressive experience in fulfillment, logistics, supply chain operations, or warehouse management is essential. At least 5-7 years of this experience must be in a senior leadership or directorial capacity, overseeing complex multi-site or large-scale operations.

Industry Knowledge

Demonstrated expertise in e-commerce fulfillment, omni-channel logistics, and direct-to-consumer (DTC) operations. Experience with various fulfillment models, including 3PL management, dropshipping, and in-house operations.

Technical Acumen

Proficient understanding and hands-on experience with Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite). Experience with data analytics tools and reporting platforms.

Process Improvement Methodologies

Strong knowledge and practical application of Lean principles, Six Sigma methodologies, Kaizen, or other continuous improvement frameworks. Certification in these areas is a plus.

Leadership & Management Skills

Proven ability to inspire, motivate, and manage large teams across different functions. Excellent coaching, mentoring, and performance management skills. Ability to foster a collaborative and high-performance culture.
