As the VP of Distribution Center Operations, you will hold ultimate responsibility for the strategy, execution, and performance of the company’s entire distribution network. The VP of Distribution Center Operations will have a broad and impactful scope of responsibilities, focusing on strategic leadership, operational execution, and team development. Success in this role requires a blend of long-term vision and hands-on operational discipline.
Strategic Leadership & Network Optimization
Develop and execute a comprehensive, multi-year strategy for the distribution network that aligns with the company’s overall growth objectives. Continuously evaluate network design, capacity, and flow to optimize for speed, cost, and service. Lead initiatives for new facility startups, expansions, or consolidations as required by business needs.
Operational Excellence & Performance Management
Establish, monitor, and drive key performance indicators (KPIs) across all distribution centers, including safety, quality, on-time shipping, order accuracy, productivity, and cost per unit. Implement and sustain lean methodologies and continuous improvement programs to eliminate waste and enhance efficiency. Champion the use of data analytics to identify trends, pinpoint root causes, and drive informed decision-making.
Financial Acumen & P&L Ownership
Assume full P&L responsibility for the entire distribution network. Develop and manage annual operating budgets and long-range financial plans. Oversee capital expenditure (CapEx) planning and justification for new technology, automation, and facility upgrades. Aggressively pursue cost-saving opportunities while maintaining or improving service levels.
Team Leadership & Talent Development
Lead, mentor, and inspire a large organization of directors, managers, and thousands of hourly associates across multiple sites. Foster a positive, inclusive, and high-performance culture rooted in safety, accountability, and respect. Develop a robust talent pipeline and succession plans for key leadership roles within the operations organization.
Technology & Automation Integration
Act as the primary business sponsor for the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new supply chain technologies, including Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), robotics, and other automation solutions. Ensure technology is leveraged to its full potential to drive productivity, accuracy, and scalability.
Safety, Security & Compliance
Champion a world-class safety culture, ensuring all facilities meet and exceed OSHA and other regulatory standards. Implement programs and policies that guarantee a safe and secure working environment for all employees. Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local transportation and labor regulations.
Vendor & 3PL Partnership Management
Oversee relationships with key vendors, including transportation carriers, third-party logistics (3PL) providers, and equipment suppliers. Lead contract negotiations to ensure favorable terms and service levels. Hold partners accountable for performance through regular business reviews and scorecards.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Serve as a key partner to the executive leadership team. Collaborate closely with peers in Merchandising, Planning, Store Operations, E-commerce, IT, and Finance to ensure seamless integration and alignment of supply chain activities with broader company initiatives. This includes supporting new product launches, promotional events, and strategic business pivots. Uphold the highest standards and best practices in supply chain management to drive enterprise-wide value.
Requirements for the VP, Distribution Center Operations with a Major Retailer – Indianapolis, IN
We are seeking a seasoned executive with a proven track record of success in leading large-scale, complex distribution operations within a fast-paced environment.
Education
A Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.
Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive leadership experience in supply chain and distribution management, with at least 7-10 years in a senior leadership role (e.g., Director, Senior Director, or VP) with multi-site and P&L responsibility.
Industry Background
Direct experience in a high-volume, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), retail, or e-commerce environment is essential. The ideal candidate will have managed a network of large-scale distribution centers (500,000+ sq. ft.).
Leadership Skills
Demonstrated ability to lead and develop large, diverse teams. A proven change agent with experience transforming operations and culture. An inspirational and motivational leader who can set a clear vision and rally a team to execute against it.
Technical Expertise
Deep knowledge of modern warehouse management systems (WMS), transportation management systems (TMS), and inventory control processes. Significant experience with implementing and scaling warehouse automation and robotics is a strong plus.
Financial & Analytical Skills
Strong command of financial principles, with extensive experience in budget development, P&L management, and capital planning. Must be highly analytical and data-driven, with proficiency in using metrics to drive performance.
Certifications
Lean Six Sigma (Green or Black Belt), APICS (CSCP, CLTD), or other relevant supply chain certifications are highly desirable.
