Key Responsibilities of Chief Development Operations Officer with a Mid-Size Pharma – San Francisco, CA

The Chief Development Operations Officer will have a broad range of responsibilities, encompassing strategic oversight, operational execution, and team leadership. Key duties include:

Strategic Leadership & Planning

Collaborate with the executive team to define and execute the company’s clinical development strategy. Provide strategic input on clinical development plans, study designs, timelines, and budgets to ensure alignment with corporate goals.

Operational Excellence

Assume full accountability for the oversight and execution of all clinical development operations activities, including Clinical Operations, Data Management, Biostatistics, Clinical Pharmacology, and Pharmacovigilance. Ensure all clinical trials are conducted on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Regulatory Compliance

Guarantee that all clinical development activities are conducted in strict adherence to global regulatory requirements, including Good Clinical Practice (GCP), ICH guidelines, and other applicable regulations. Oversee the preparation and review of clinical sections of regulatory submissions (e.g., INDs, NDAs, BLAs, MAAs).

Team Leadership & Development

Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing development operations team. Foster a positive and collaborative team culture that promotes accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement. Attract and retain top talent to build a scalable and effective organization.

Vendor and CRO Management

Lead the selection, management, and oversight of Contract Research Organizations (CROs), central labs, and other clinical vendors. Establish strong partnerships and implement robust oversight plans to ensure vendor performance and quality.

Financial Management

Develop, manage, and oversee the development operations budget, ensuring optimal allocation of resources. Provide accurate forecasting and tracking of clinical trial costs and resource needs.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Serve as a key leader within the organization, fostering strong collaborative relationships with R&D, Regulatory Affairs, Medical Affairs, Commercial, and Finance teams to ensure seamless program execution.

Process Improvement

Drive the implementation of best practices, innovative technologies, and streamlined processes within development operations to enhance efficiency, quality, and speed. Champion a mindset of continuous improvement across the function.

Requirements for the Chief Development Operations Officer with a Mid-Size Pharma – San Francisco, CA

The ideal candidate will be a highly experienced and accomplished leader with a deep understanding of the drug development process. Qualifications include:

Educational Background

An advanced degree (MD, PhD, or PharmD) is strongly preferred. A Bachelor’s degree in a life science discipline is required.

Professional Experience

A minimum of 15-20 years of progressive experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with at least 10 years in a senior leadership role overseeing clinical development operations.

Proven Track Record

Demonstrated success in leading and managing global clinical development programs from early-stage through to regulatory approval and commercialization. Experience with successful NDA/BLA submissions is essential.

Communication Skills

Location
