As the CCSO, you will be the principal architect of the company’s global commercial strategy. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, you will be responsible for developing and executing a comprehensive plan to maximize the value of the company’s assets from late-stage development through post-launch lifecycle management. You will build a world-class commercial organization from the ground up, instilling a culture of innovation, accountability, and patient-centricity. Key Responsibilities of Chief Commercial Strategy Officer with a Public Biopharma – San Francisco, CA
Executive Leadership & Strategy
Serve as a key member of the executive team, contributing to overall corporate strategy, long-range planning, and investor relations. Develop and champion a compelling global commercial vision that aligns with the company’s scientific and financial objectives.
Product Launch Excellence
Architect and lead all pre-launch, launch, and post-launch commercial activities for the company’s pipeline assets. Develop integrated go-to-market strategies, including product positioning, branding, messaging, and lifecycle management plans.
Commercial Infrastructure Development
Build and scale a high-performing, fully-integrated commercial organization, including Marketing, Sales, Market Access, Commercial Operations, and Analytics functions. Recruit, mentor, and retain top-tier talent.
Market Access, Pricing & Reimbursement
Devise and execute innovative global market access strategies to ensure optimal pricing, reimbursement, and patient access. Cultivate strong relationships with payers, health authorities, and policy makers.
Marketing & Brand Management
Oversee the development of global brand strategies, ensuring a powerful and consistent message across all channels. Drive the creation of compelling marketing materials and digital engagement strategies for healthcare professionals, patients, and payers.
Sales Force Strategy & Execution
Design and implement the sales force structure, sizing, targeting, and incentive compensation plans to maximize commercial effectiveness and drive revenue growth.
Commercial Analytics & Insights
Establish a robust commercial analytics and intelligence function to generate deep market insights, inform strategic decisions, and develop accurate forecasting models. Utilize data to monitor performance and identify market trends and opportunities.
Stakeholder Engagement
Act as a primary commercial spokesperson for the company. Build and maintain strong relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), patient advocacy groups, and other external stakeholders to champion the company’s therapeutic advancements.
Business Development Collaboration
Partner closely with the business development team to provide commercial assessment and due diligence for potential in-licensing, partnership, and M&A opportunities.
Compliance & Ethics
Ensure that all commercial activities are conducted in strict compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and industry codes, including the rigorous regulatory standards set by the FDA and other global health authorities. Champion a culture of integrity and ethical conduct throughout the organization.
Requirements for the Chief Commercial Strategy Officer with a Public Biopharma – San Francisco, CA
Educational Background
An advanced degree (MBA, PhD, PharmD, or MD) is strongly preferred. A Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, business, or a related field is required.
Executive Experience
A minimum of 15-20 years of progressive commercial leadership experience within the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry. Demonstrated success in a senior leadership role (e.g., VP, SVP, General Manager, or C-level) with broad functional oversight.
Launch Expertise
A proven and extensive track record of successfully leading the strategy and execution for multiple product launches, preferably in specialty, orphan, or rare disease therapeutic areas. Experience launching a first-in-class product is highly desirable.
Public Company Acumen
Prior experience working within a publicly-traded biopharmaceutical company is highly advantageous, with a strong understanding of investor relations and SEC reporting implications for commercial activities.
Functional Mastery
Deep, hands-on expertise across the full spectrum of commercial functions, including global marketing, sales leadership, market access, pricing & reimbursement, and commercial operations.
Leadership & Influence
Exceptional executive presence and communication skills. A proven ability to lead, influence, and build consensus across all levels of an organization and with external partners. A track record of building and mentoring high-performing teams is essential.
Strategic & Analytical Mindset
Superior strategic thinking and problem-solving abilities. Capable of analyzing complex data and market dynamics to formulate and articulate a clear, actionable commercial strategy.
Location
Must be able to work in a hybrid model based out of the company’s headquarters in the San Francisco Bay Area.
