Key Responsibilities of VP, FP&A with a Healthcare System – Baltimore, MD
The Vice President, FP&A will direct all aspects of the financial planning and analysis function. This includes, but is not limited to, the following key responsibilities:
Strategic Financial Leadership & Long-Range Planning
Act as the primary architect of the organization’s long-range financial plan (LRFP), working in close collaboration with the executive team to align financial strategy with clinical and operational goals. Develop sophisticated financial models to assess the impact of strategic initiatives, market shifts, and regulatory changes.
Budgeting and Forecasting Excellence
Lead the end-to-end annual operating and capital budget process, ensuring a disciplined, collaborative, and transparent approach. Oversee the development of rolling forecasts and predictive analytics to provide real-time visibility into financial performance and identify potential risks and opportunities.
Advanced Financial Analysis & Performance Reporting
Direct the preparation of comprehensive financial analysis, including variance analysis, trend analysis, and service line profitability. Develop and maintain a robust set of Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and dashboards to provide actionable insights to leadership. Prepare and present clear, concise, and compelling financial reports for the executive team, Board of Directors, and other key stakeholders.
Business Partnership & Decision Support
Serve as a trusted financial advisor to senior executives and operational leaders across the health system. Provide in-depth financial analysis and modeling to support critical business decisions, including new program development, capital investments, payer contract negotiations, and strategic partnerships.
Team Leadership & Talent Development
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing FP&A team. Foster a culture of accountability, intellectual curiosity, and continuous learning. Champion the professional growth of team members and build a strong succession pipeline for the finance organization.
Process Optimization & Systems Enhancement
Continuously evaluate and improve FP&A processes, systems, and tools to increase efficiency, accuracy, and analytical capabilities. Champion the adoption of new technologies and data analytics platforms to enhance the finance function’s value to the organization.
Healthcare Industry Acumen
Maintain a deep understanding of the economic and regulatory drivers of the healthcare industry, including Medicare/Medicaid reimbursement, value-based care models, and population health initiatives. A deep understanding of best practices in healthcare financial management is critical for success in this role.
Capital Planning and Allocation
Oversee the capital planning process, ensuring rigorous financial evaluation (e.g., ROI, NPV, payback period) of all significant capital expenditure requests. Partner with operational leaders to prioritize capital investments that align with strategic objectives and deliver the greatest value.

The ideal candidate will be a results-oriented and strategic finance leader with a proven track record of success in a complex healthcare environment. Specific qualifications include:
Educational Background
A Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Economics, or a related field is required. A Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) or a related advanced degree is strongly preferred.
Professional Certification
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is highly desirable.
Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in finance and accounting, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership role overseeing the FP&A function for a large, complex organization.
Mandatory Industry Experience

Technical & Analytical Proficiency
Expert-level financial modeling and analytical skills. Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint is a must. Extensive experience with Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) systems (e.g., Oracle Hyperion, Workday Adaptive Planning, Anaplan) and large-scale ERP systems is required.
Communication & Presentation Skills
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. The ability to distill complex financial information into clear, concise, and impactful presentations for executive and board-level audiences is critical.
