Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the VP of Supply Chain Optimization will have end-to-end ownership of the entire supply chain ecosystem. This includes strategic sourcing and procurement, demand and supply planning, inventory management, warehousing, logistics, and final-mile distribution. You will be tasked with transforming the current supply chain into a competitive advantage, leveraging technology, data analytics, and continuous improvement methodologies to drive efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance customer satisfaction.

Key Responsibilities of VP, Supply Chain Optimization with a Food & Beverage Co. – Sacramento, CA
Strategic Leadership & Vision
Develop, articulate, and implement a comprehensive, long-term supply chain strategy that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives, growth targets, and sustainability goals. Champion innovation and act as a change agent to foster a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence across the organization.
End-to-End Network Optimization
Conduct a thorough analysis of the existing supply chain network, including manufacturing sites, distribution centers, and transportation lanes. Design and implement network optimization strategies to improve flow, reduce lead times, minimize costs, and enhance service levels.
Process Improvement & Technology Integration
Lead initiatives to streamline processes and eliminate waste using methodologies like Lean, Six Sigma, and Kaizen. Drive the selection and implementation of advanced supply chain technologies, including ERP, WMS (Warehouse Management Systems), and TMS (Transportation Management Systems), to improve visibility, data accuracy, and decision-making capabilities.
Demand & Supply Planning Leadership
Oversee the Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process to ensure alignment between demand forecasts, inventory levels, and production capacity. Develop sophisticated forecasting models and inventory strategies to optimize stock levels, minimize carrying costs, and prevent stock-outs or obsolescence.
Strategic Sourcing & Procurement
Develop and manage a robust strategic sourcing function to build strong, collaborative relationships with key suppliers and vendors. Lead contract negotiations, establish performance metrics (KPIs), and implement supplier relationship management (SRM) programs to ensure quality, reliability, and cost-effectiveness of raw materials and services.
Logistics & Distribution Excellence
Oversee all domestic and international logistics, including freight management, carrier selection, and customs compliance. Optimize warehousing operations, including layout, material handling, and labor management, to ensure high levels of efficiency, accuracy, and safety. Particular focus on cold chain integrity is paramount.
Team Development & Mentorship
Build, lead, and mentor a world-class supply chain organization. Attract, retain, and develop top talent, providing clear direction, coaching, and opportunities for professional growth. Foster a collaborative and results-oriented team environment.
Financial Acumen & Budget Management
Develop and manage the annual supply chain budget, including capital expenditures and operating costs. Meticulously track financial performance against targets and identify opportunities for cost savings and margin improvement without compromising quality or service.
Risk Management & Compliance
Proactively identify potential risks within the supply chain (e.g., supplier disruptions, geopolitical issues, regulatory changes) and develop robust mitigation and contingency plans. Ensure full compliance with all relevant industry regulations, including those from the FDA, USDA, and other governing bodies.

Educational Background
A Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.
Executive Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in supply chain management, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership role (Director level or above) overseeing multiple supply chain functions.
Industry Expertise
Direct and extensive experience within the Food & Beverage, Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG), or a related industry with complex supply chains is mandatory. Deep knowledge of cold chain logistics, food safety standards (e.g., FSMA), and quality control is essential.
Proven Leadership
Demonstrated success in building, leading, and developing high-performing, multi-disciplinary teams. A track record of inspiring change and driving results in a dynamic environment.
Analytical & Technical Skills
Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and data-driven decision-making skills. High proficiency with modern ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle), WMS/TMS platforms, and advanced planning software.
Strategic Thinking
Ability to think strategically and translate broad corporate goals into clear, actionable supply chain initiatives. Experience with network modeling and long-range capacity planning is a significant asset.
Certifications
Professional certifications such as the APICS Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) or Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) are strongly desired.
Communication & Influence
Superior communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills. The ability to influence and collaborate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, from the C-suite to the warehouse floor.
