Key Responsibilities of EVP, Capital Markets with a Large Investment Bank – Jersey City, NJ
Strategic Leadership & Vision
Develop and execute a comprehensive, forward-looking strategy for the Capital Markets division that aligns with the bank’s overall corporate objectives. Identify new market opportunities, product innovations, and growth avenues to enhance market share and profitability.
P&L Management
Assume full P&L responsibility for the Capital Markets division. This includes developing annual budgets, forecasting revenue streams, managing a complex expense base, and reporting on financial performance to the executive committee and board of directors. Drive efficiency and maximize return on capital.
Business Development & Client Relationship Management
Leverage an extensive network of C-suite executives, private equity sponsors, and institutional investors to originate high-profile capital markets transactions. Act as the senior relationship manager for the firm’s most critical clients, providing strategic advice on capital structure, financing alternatives, and market timing.
Transaction Origination & Execution
Lead the origination efforts across all capital markets products, including IPOs, follow-on offerings, convertible securities, investment-grade and high-yield debt, leveraged loans, and private placements. Provide senior oversight on all aspects of transaction execution, from due diligence and structuring to marketing and closing, ensuring the highest standards of quality and client service.
Team Leadership & Talent Development
Lead, mentor, and develop a large, geographically dispersed team of capital markets professionals. Foster a collaborative and inclusive culture that attracts, retains, and develops top-tier talent. Set clear performance expectations, provide regular feedback, and oversee compensation and promotion processes.
Risk Management & Regulatory Compliance
Champion a strong risk management culture within the division. Ensure all activities are conducted in strict adherence to internal policies and external regulations. Maintain ultimate responsibility for the division’s compliance with all relevant authorities, including a deep understanding of rules set by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and the SEC. Proactively identify and mitigate potential market, credit, and operational risks.
Market Intelligence & Thought Leadership
Serve as the firm’s primary expert on capital markets trends, conditions, and outlook. Provide insightful commentary and strategic advice to clients and internal stakeholders. Represent the bank at industry conferences, in the media, and in other high-profile forums to enhance its brand and reputation.
Cross-Divisional Collaboration
Work seamlessly with other senior leaders across the investment bank, including Mergers & Acquisitions, Sales & Trading, Research, and Corporate Banking, to deliver integrated, holistic solutions to clients and maximize cross-selling opportunities.
Requirements for the EVP, Capital Markets with a Large Investment Bank – Jersey City, NJ
Experience
A minimum of 20 years of progressive experience within investment banking, specifically in capital markets. A proven track record of success at the Managing Director or equivalent senior level at a top-tier investment bank is essential.
Transactional Expertise
Demonstrable experience leading the origination and execution of a significant volume of complex ECM and DCM transactions across various industries. Deep product knowledge is required.
Leadership Acumen
Extensive experience managing large, high-performing teams. Must be a proven leader with the ability to inspire, motivate, and guide senior professionals, with a history of developing talent into leadership roles.
Client Network
A vast, portable network of senior-level relationships with corporate issuers, financial sponsors, and institutional investors is a prerequisite for this role.
Strategic Mindset
The ability to think strategically, anticipate future market trends, and develop innovative business plans to capitalize on them. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are critical.
Education
An MBA from a top-tier business school or an equivalent advanced degree in Finance, Economics, or a related field is strongly preferred.
Certifications
A CFA charter is highly desirable. Must hold or be able to obtain necessary FINRA licenses (e.g., Series 7, 24, 63, 79) promptly.
Communication Skills
Exceptional interpersonal, presentation, and negotiation skills. The ability to articulate complex financial concepts clearly and persuasively to sophisticated clients and internal audiences.
