Key Responsibilities of Chief Financial Officer with a PE-backed Retailer – Bentonville, AR

The Chief Financial Officer will direct and oversee all financial and accounting functions of the organization. This is a broad role encompassing strategic planning, operational finance, and corporate governance.

Strategic Financial Leadership & Business Partnership

  • Act as a key strategic partner to the CEO and executive team, providing critical financial insights, risk analysis, and strategic recommendations on all major business decisions.
  • Develop and execute a comprehensive long-range financial plan that aligns with the company’s growth objectives and the PE sponsor’s value creation thesis.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process and quarterly forecasting cycles, ensuring financial plans are robust, accurate, and aligned with strategic priorities.
  • Spearhead merger and acquisition (M&A) activities, from target identification and financial due diligence to valuation, negotiation, and post-merger integration.
  • Provide leadership in capital allocation decisions, ensuring investments are directed towards projects with the highest potential for return and strategic value.

Financial Planning & Analysis (FP&A)

  • Build and lead a high-performing FP&A function that provides deep, actionable insights into business performance, trends, and opportunities.
  • Develop and refine key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational metrics to drive accountability and performance across all departments.
  • Oversee the creation of sophisticated financial models to support strategic planning, scenario analysis, and investment decisions.
  • Prepare and present detailed monthly and quarterly financial reports, including variance analysis and insightful commentary for the executive team and Board of Directors.

Accounting, Controls, & Reporting

  • Ensure the integrity and accuracy of all financial data and reporting, guaranteeing compliance with US GAAP and other regulatory requirements.
  • Lead and manage the accounting team to ensure a timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close process.
  • Design, implement, and maintain a robust system of internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure financial discipline.
  • Serve as the primary liaison with external auditors, managing the annual audit process to a successful and clean conclusion.
  • Oversee all tax planning and compliance activities, working with external advisors to optimize the company’s tax strategy.

Treasury & Capital Management

  • Manage the company’s capital structure, including debt financing and equity. Ensure compliance with all debt covenants and maintain strong relationships with lenders and banking partners.
  • Develop and implement effective cash management and treasury strategies to optimize liquidity, manage working capital, and mitigate financial risk.
  • Oversee risk management and insurance programs to protect the company from potential liabilities.

Investor Relations & Board Management

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for the private equity sponsors, providing transparent, timely, and accurate reporting on financial performance and strategic initiatives.
  • Prepare comprehensive board materials and deliver compelling presentations to the Board of Directors, effectively communicating the company’s financial story.
  • Play a key role in future fundraising activities and the ultimate exit strategy, whether through a strategic sale, secondary buyout, or IPO.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field is required. An MBA and/or CPA designation is strongly preferred.

Experience

A minimum of 15+ years of progressive financial leadership experience, with at least 5 years in a senior role (CFO, VP of Finance) for a company of significant scale.
