Key Responsibilities of Chief Innovation Officer – San Diego, CA

The Chief Innovation Officer will have a broad and impactful scope of responsibilities, directing all aspects of the company’s innovation and research and development efforts. Strategic Innovation Leadership

Develop, articulate, and execute a comprehensive, long-range innovation strategy that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives. Continuously scan the horizon for emerging technologies, clinical trends, competitive threats, and partnership opportunities to maintain a competitive edge.

R&D Pipeline Management

Assume full ownership of the R&D portfolio, from early-stage feasibility and ideation through product development, verification, validation, and launch. Implement robust stage-gate processes to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

Portfolio Optimization

Make critical decisions regarding project prioritization, resource allocation, and risk mitigation. Conduct rigorous technical and commercial assessments to ensure the innovation portfolio is balanced, de-risked, and positioned for maximum return on investment.

Team Development & Mentorship

Lead, inspire, and develop a high-performing, multidisciplinary R&D organization. Foster a culture of accountability, scientific rigor, and relentless curiosity. Mentor senior leaders within the team and champion professional development across the department.

Regulatory & Quality Compliance

Ensure that all product development activities adhere to the strictest global regulatory and quality standards. Maintain a deep understanding of and ensure compliance with the FDA’s rigorous guidelines for medical devices, ISO 13485, and other relevant international regulations.

Financial & Budgetary Oversight

Develop and manage the annual R&D budget, ensuring efficient allocation of capital and human resources. Provide regular reporting to the executive team and Board of Directors on R&D progress, key milestones, and financial performance.

Executive Leadership Contribution

As a member of the senior executive team, play an active role in shaping the overall corporate strategy, participating in M&A due diligence, and representing the company’s technological vision to investors, partners, and the broader industry.

Requirements for the Chief Innovation Officer – San Diego, CA

We are seeking a seasoned executive with a distinguished career in medical device innovation. The successful candidate will possess a unique blend of technical depth, strategic vision, and inspirational leadership.

Educational Background

An advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related scientific discipline is required. An M.B.A. is highly preferred and will be considered a significant asset.

Executive Experience

A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience within the medical device industry, with at least 7-10 years in a senior leadership capacity (e.g., Vice President of R&D, Head of Innovation, CTO).

Product Commercialization Track Record

Demonstrable success in leading the development and launch of multiple complex medical devices, preferably Class II or Class III products, from initial concept through to global market release.

Technical & Engineering Acumen

Deep expertise in the principles of medical device design, including systems engineering, materials science, software development, and manufacturing processes. Experience with sophisticated therapeutic or diagnostic devices is essential.

Regulatory Expertise

Extensive, hands-on experience navigating the global regulatory landscape, including successful 510(k) and/or PMA submissions with the FDA and obtaining CE Marks in Europe.

Strategic & Business Acumen

Proven ability to think strategically, analyze market dynamics, and translate technical innovation into tangible business value. Strong financial literacy and experience managing multi-million dollar budgets are required.

Leadership & Communication Skills
