
Role Overview for VP of Manufacturing Operations

The VP of Manufacturing Operations will be entrusted with the full scope of the manufacturing and production ecosystem, from strategic planning and execution to fostering a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement across all facilities. Key Responsibilities of VP of Manufacturing Operations
Strategic Leadership & Vision
Develop and execute a comprehensive manufacturing strategy that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives. Set clear goals, KPIs, and metrics to drive performance and accountability across all plants and operational departments.
Operational Excellence
Direct and oversee all daily manufacturing operations, ensuring production targets for quality, cost, and delivery are consistently met or exceeded. Champion a culture of continuous improvement by implementing principles of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other methodologies to optimize processes, eliminate waste, and increase efficiency.
Financial & Budgetary Management
Assume full P&L responsibility for manufacturing operations. Develop and manage annual budgets, capital expenditure plans, and operational forecasts. Analyze financial data to identify opportunities for cost reduction and resource optimization.
Supply Chain & Materials Management
Collaborate with the supply chain team to ensure a seamless flow of materials, from procurement and inventory control to logistics and distribution. Develop strategies to mitigate supply chain risks and improve supplier performance.
Quality Assurance & Control
Uphold and enhance the company’s commitment to quality. Ensure all products meet or exceed stringent quality standards and regulatory requirements. Oversee the Quality Management System (QMS) and drive initiatives to reduce defects and improve customer satisfaction.
Team Development & Leadership
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing manufacturing leadership team. Foster a collaborative, inclusive, and engaging work environment that attracts, retains, and develops top talent at all levels of the organization.
Health, Safety, & Environmental (HSE) Compliance
Champion a world-class safety culture. Ensure all operations comply with local, state, and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, etc.). Implement and monitor robust safety programs to achieve a zero-incident workplace.
Technology & Innovation
Evaluate and implement new technologies, automation, and manufacturing systems (e.g., MES, ERP enhancements) to improve productivity, data analytics, and operational capabilities. Stay abreast of industry trends and innovations to maintain a competitive edge.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work closely with other executive leaders in R&D, Engineering, Sales, and Finance to ensure seamless product launches, effective capacity planning, and alignment on corporate goals.
Requirements for the VP of Manufacturing Operations
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Business Administration, Operations Management, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is strongly preferred.
Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in a manufacturing environment, with at least 7-10 years in a senior leadership capacity (e.g., Director of Operations, Plant Manager, VP of Operations) overseeing multi-site operations.
Lean & Continuous Improvement Expertise
Demonstrated mastery of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma (Black Belt certification is a plus), Kaizen, and other continuous improvement methodologies. A proven track record of successfully leading transformation initiatives that resulted in significant operational and financial improvements.
Financial Acumen
Strong P&L management experience with a deep understanding of cost accounting, budgeting, forecasting, and capital investment analysis.
Leadership Skills
Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. The ability to inspire, motivate, and influence teams at all levels of the organization. Proven experience in change management and building a positive, performance-driven culture.
Strategic Thinking
Ability to think strategically and translate broad corporate goals into clear, actionable operational plans. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential.
Technical Proficiency
Proficient with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle), Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES), and other relevant software.
Regulatory Knowledge
In-depth knowledge of OSHA, EPA, and other relevant safety and environmental regulations. Experience with ISO or other quality standard certifications is highly desirable.
