Key Responsibilities of VP of Manufacturing (Medical Device)
Strategic Leadership & Planning
Develop and execute a comprehensive manufacturing strategy aligned with the company’s overall business objectives, growth plans, and product roadmap. Lead long-range planning for capacity, technology, and facility expansion.
Operational Excellence & Efficiency
Drive continuous improvement initiatives across all manufacturing processes using Lean, Six Sigma, and other advanced methodologies to enhance productivity, reduce costs, and minimize waste. Oversee production scheduling, material flow, and inventory management to optimize operational efficiency.
Quality & Regulatory Compliance
Ensure strict adherence to all relevant national and international medical device regulations, including FDA Quality System Regulation (QSR), ISO 13485, and MDR. Champion a culture of quality and compliance throughout the manufacturing organization. Oversee the development and implementation of robust quality control systems and procedures.
Team Leadership & Development
Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing manufacturing team. Foster a collaborative and engaging work environment that promotes professional growth, accountability, and continuous learning. Provide strong leadership and guidance to manufacturing directors, managers, and staff across multiple shifts or facilities.
Budget Management & Cost Control
Develop and manage the annual manufacturing budget, controlling expenditures while ensuring production targets and quality standards are met. Identify and implement cost-saving opportunities without compromising quality or regulatory compliance.
Supply Chain & Supplier Management
Collaborate closely with the supply chain team to ensure a robust and resilient supply of raw materials and components. Participate in strategic supplier selection and relationship management to mitigate risks and ensure material quality.
New Product Introduction (NPI)
Partner with R&D and Engineering teams to ensure seamless transition of new products from development to full-scale production, optimizing manufacturability, cost, and quality.
Technology & Automation
Evaluate, recommend, and implement new manufacturing technologies, automation solutions, and equipment to improve efficiency, precision, and scalability.
Risk Management
Identify potential operational risks and develop mitigation strategies to ensure business continuity and product quality.
Performance Metrics
Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for manufacturing operations, regularly reporting on progress and making data-driven decisions to optimize performance.
Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS)
Ensure all manufacturing operations comply with EHS regulations and promote a safe working environment for all employees.
Requirements for the VP of Manufacturing (Medical Device)
To be considered for this pivotal leadership role, candidates must possess a unique blend of strategic acumen, operational expertise, and a deep understanding of the medical device industry’s stringent regulatory landscape. Education
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (e.g., Mechanical, Biomedical, Industrial, Manufacturing) or a related technical field is required. An MBA or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline is highly preferred.
Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive leadership experience in medical device manufacturing, with at least 7-10 years in a senior management or executive-level role (Director or VP).
Industry Expertise
Extensive knowledge of medical device manufacturing processes, including assembly, sterilization, packaging, and testing. Proven experience with a variety of device classes (e.g., Class II, Class III) is a significant advantage.
Regulatory Acumen
In-depth understanding and hands-on experience with global medical device regulations, including the FDA Quality System Regulation (QSR) 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485, and Medical Device Regulation (MDR) in Europe. Experience with regulatory audits and submissions is essential.
Operational Methodologies
Demonstrated expertise in implementing and sustaining Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, and other continuous improvement methodologies. Certification (e.g., Black Belt) is a plus.
Leadership Skills
Exceptional leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence, motivate, and develop diverse teams. Proven ability to build strong cross-functional relationships.
Strategic Thinking
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a proven track record of developing and executing strategic plans that drive operational excellence and business growth.
Financial Acumen
Solid understanding of P&L management, budgeting, and cost control principles within a manufacturing context.
Global Experience
