Key Responsibilities of Operations Director (Distribution)
Strategic Leadership & Planning
Develop and execute comprehensive distribution strategies that align with overall business objectives, including network optimization, capacity planning, and future growth initiatives.
Warehouse Operations Management
Oversee all aspects of distribution center operations, including receiving, put-away, storage, inventory control, order picking, packing, shipping, and returns processing. Ensure efficient flow of goods and adherence to operational KPIs.
Inventory Management
Implement and manage robust inventory control systems and processes to maintain optimal stock levels, minimize obsolescence, and ensure accuracy, directly impacting working capital and service levels.
Logistics & Transportation
Manage inbound and outbound logistics, negotiating with carriers, optimizing routes, and selecting cost-effective and reliable transportation solutions to meet delivery schedules and budget targets.
Team Leadership & Development
Recruit, train, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of distribution managers, supervisors, and associates. Foster a positive, productive, and safety-conscious work environment.
Budget & P&L Management
Develop, manage, and control the annual operating budget for distribution operations. Monitor expenditures, identify cost-saving opportunities, and ensure financial targets are met or exceeded.
Process Improvement & Lean Methodologies
Champion continuous improvement initiatives using Lean, Six Sigma, and other methodologies to identify bottlenecks, streamline processes, and enhance operational efficiency and productivity. Drive a culture of data-driven decision making. Explore leading insights on optimizing supply chain operations to stay ahead of industry trends.
Technology Implementation & Optimization
Evaluate, implement, and optimize Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), and other relevant technologies to improve operational visibility, efficiency, and accuracy.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure all distribution operations comply with federal, state, and local regulations, including OSHA, DOT, and environmental standards. Implement and enforce robust safety programs to protect employees and assets.
Vendor & Supplier Management
Manage relationships with third-party logistics (3PL) providers, equipment suppliers, and other vendors to ensure high-quality service, favorable terms, and reliable partnerships.
Customer Service Collaboration
Work closely with sales and customer service teams to understand customer requirements, resolve issues, and ensure that distribution operations consistently meet or exceed customer expectations for delivery and order accuracy.
Performance Monitoring & Reporting
Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for all distribution functions. Prepare regular reports for senior management, highlighting performance trends, achievements, and areas for improvement.
Risk Management
Identify potential risks within the supply chain and distribution network, developing mitigation strategies to ensure business continuity and minimize disruptions.
Sustainability Initiatives
Explore and implement sustainable practices within distribution operations, such as optimizing energy consumption, waste reduction, and eco-friendly packaging solutions.
Requirements for the Operations Director (Distribution)
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Industrial Engineering, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree (MBA or equivalent) is highly preferred.
Experience
A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience in distribution, logistics, and supply chain operations, with at least 5-7 years in a Director-level or equivalent senior management role overseeing multiple distribution centers or a large-scale operation.
Technical Acumen
Proficient understanding and hands-on experience with advanced Warehouse Management Systems (WMS), Transportation Management Systems (TMS), and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems. Experience with system implementations and optimizations is a significant plus.
Process Improvement Expertise
Demonstrated success in applying Lean principles, Six Sigma methodologies, Kaizen, or other continuous improvement frameworks to achieve measurable operational efficiencies and cost reductions. Certification in these areas is a strong advantage.
Leadership & Management Skills
Exceptional leadership capabilities with a proven ability to build, motivate, and develop high-performing teams. Strong change management skills and the ability to lead through organizational transformation.
Financial Acumen
Solid understanding of financial management principles, including budgeting, forecasting, cost analysis, and P&L responsibility for multi-million dollar operations.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively present complex information to diverse audiences, including executive leadership, team members, and external partners. Strong negotiation and influencing skills.
