Key Responsibilities of National Account Manager

Strategic Account Planning & Execution

Develop and implement comprehensive strategic account plans for assigned national accounts, aligning with overall business objectives. This includes identifying key stakeholders, understanding customer ecosystems, and mapping out growth opportunities.

Revenue Growth & Profitability

Drive aggressive revenue growth within existing national accounts through upselling, cross-selling, and identifying new business opportunities. Ensure profitability and maximize the lifetime value of each account.

Relationship Management

Cultivate and maintain strong, long-lasting relationships with key decision-makers and influencers at all levels within national accounts, including C-suite executives, procurement, and technical teams. Act as a trusted advisor.

Negotiation & Contract Management

Lead complex contract negotiations, renewals, and amendments to secure favorable terms for the company while fostering strong client partnerships. Ensure compliance with all contractual obligations.

Market & Competitive Analysis

Continuously monitor market trends, competitive activities, and customer needs to identify new opportunities and potential threats. Provide valuable insights to internal teams to inform product development and marketing strategies.

Sales Forecasting & Reporting

Develop accurate sales forecasts, manage a robust sales pipeline, and provide regular, detailed reports on account performance, progress against targets, and market insights to senior leadership.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

Collaborate effectively with internal teams including marketing, product development, customer success, operations, and finance to ensure seamless service delivery and address client requirements comprehensively.

Solution Development

Work closely with clients to understand their challenges and co-create customized solutions leveraging our client’s full portfolio of products and services, ensuring high value and strategic alignment.

Problem Resolution

Proactively identify and resolve client issues, escalating when necessary, to ensure high levels of customer satisfaction and retention. Be the voice of the customer internally.

Product & Service Knowledge

Maintain a deep and up-to-date understanding of all products, services, and industry-specific solutions offered by our client, articulating their value proposition compellingly to clients.

Presentation & Communication

Deliver impactful presentations and proposals to clients and internal stakeholders, articulating complex information clearly and persuasively. Ensure all communication is professional and timely.

Budget Management

Manage sales budgets and expenses effectively, ensuring optimal resource allocation to achieve sales objectives.

Strategic Account Management Best Practices

To truly excel, a National Account Manager must constantly refine their understanding of strategic account management best practices and apply them to their daily work. This involves continuous learning and adapting to evolving industry standards and client expectations.

Requirements for the National Account Manager

Experience

A minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in National Account Management, Strategic Account Management, or a similar senior B2B sales role, with a proven track record of exceeding sales quotas and managing multi-million dollar accounts. Experience in a relevant industry (e.g., CPG, SaaS, Manufacturing, Healthcare, Logistics) is highly preferred.

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Economics, or a related field is required. An MBA or equivalent advanced degree is a significant advantage.

Sales Acumen

Demonstrated success in developing and executing complex sales strategies, negotiating high-value contracts, and closing significant deals with national or global accounts.

Relationship Building

Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport, trust, and influence at all levels, from operational contacts to C-suite executives.

Communication Skills
