Key Responsibilities of Director of Supply Chain Planning
Strategic Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) Leadership
Spearhead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the integrated S&OP process, ensuring alignment between sales, marketing, operations, and finance. Drive consensus on demand plans, supply capabilities, and inventory strategies to optimize business performance and achieve financial targets. This includes facilitating executive S&OP meetings, preparing robust data analysis, and driving decision-making for critical business outcomes. Advanced Demand Planning & Forecasting
Lead the development and execution of robust demand forecasting processes, utilizing advanced statistical models, market intelligence, and collaborative inputs from sales, marketing, and product development. Implement best practices in forecast accuracy measurement and drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce forecast error and bias, enhancing planning reliability.
Inventory Management & Optimization
Develop and implement comprehensive inventory strategies across the network, including raw materials, work-in-process, and finished goods. Optimize inventory levels to balance service targets with working capital efficiency, utilizing tools and techniques such as safety stock optimization, ABC analysis, and lead time reduction programs.
Supply Planning & Production Scheduling
Oversee the creation of integrated supply plans and master production schedules that align with demand forecasts, production capacity, and inventory targets. Collaborate closely with manufacturing, procurement, and logistics teams to ensure timely and efficient execution of supply plans, proactively identifying and mitigating potential supply risks.
Cross-functional Collaboration & Stakeholder Management
Serve as a key liaison across various departments, including Sales, Marketing, Finance, Operations, Procurement, and IT. Foster strong collaborative relationships, influence decision-making, and ensure cross-functional alignment on planning assumptions, strategies, and execution. Effectively communicate complex planning concepts and outcomes to diverse audiences, including executive leadership.
Team Leadership & Development
Recruit, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of supply chain planning professionals. Foster a culture of continuous learning, professional growth, accountability, and innovation within the planning organization. Technology & Systems Utilization
Champion the effective utilization and optimization of advanced planning systems (APS), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) modules, and business intelligence tools. Drive initiatives for system enhancements, data quality improvements, and the adoption of new technologies to improve planning efficiency, accuracy, and decision-making capabilities.
Performance Measurement & Continuous Improvement
Establish and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for the planning function, including forecast accuracy, inventory turns, service levels, and planning cycle times. Analyze performance trends, identify root causes of variances, and lead continuous improvement projects using Lean, Six Sigma, or other methodologies to enhance overall supply chain performance and efficiency.
Risk Management & Resilience
Proactively identify potential supply chain risks (e.g., supply disruptions, demand volatility, geopolitical events) and develop mitigation strategies. Build resilience into the planning processes to ensure business continuity and minimize impact from unforeseen events, including contingency planning and scenario analysis.
Budget Management & Cost Optimization
Contribute to the development of the supply chain budget and manage planning-related costs effectively. Identify opportunities for cost reduction and efficiency gains within the planning processes without compromising service levels or quality.
Requirements for the Director of Supply Chain Planning
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Operations Research, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related quantitative field is required. A Master’s degree (MBA or MS in Supply Chain) is highly preferred and will be a significant advantage.
Extensive Experience
A minimum of 10-15 years of progressive experience in supply chain planning roles, with at least 5-7 years in a leadership or management position overseeing a planning function. Demonstrated experience in a complex, high-volume manufacturing, CPG, retail, or distribution environment is essential.
Strategic S&OP Expertise
Proven track record of successfully designing, implementing, and managing robust Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) processes that have driven significant business improvements.
Advanced Planning Systems Proficiency
Hands-on experience with major ERP systems (e.g., SAP APO, Oracle SCM, Microsoft Dynamics AX) and advanced planning systems (e.g., Kinaxis, Blue Yonder/JDA, o9 Solutions, E2open). Strong understanding of system integration and data flow within a planning ecosystem.
