Role Overview for VP of Supply Chain – Pet Care Products
The Vice President of Supply Chain will be a key member of the executive team, reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer. You will be responsible for the strategic direction and operational execution of the entire supply chain ecosystem. This includes demand and supply planning, procurement, manufacturing/co-packer management, inventory control, logistics, warehousing, and fulfillment. Your primary objective will be to design and implement a scalable, resilient, and cost-effective supply chain that can support the company’s aggressive growth trajectory, ensure product availability, and deliver an exceptional customer experience. You will lead a dedicated team and collaborate closely with cross-functional leaders in Sales, Marketing, Product Development, and Finance to ensure alignment and achieve strategic business goals.
Key Responsibilities of VP of Supply Chain – Pet Care Products
Strategic Leadership & Planning
Develop, articulate, and execute a comprehensive, long-term supply chain strategy that aligns with the company’s overall business objectives. Champion initiatives that drive efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance service levels.
End-to-End Supply Chain Management
Assume full ownership of all supply chain functions, including demand planning, sourcing, procurement, contract manufacturing management, inventory optimization, logistics, and distribution.
Demand & Supply Planning (S&OP)
Implement and lead a robust Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process to ensure accurate demand forecasting, optimize inventory levels, and align supply with market demand, minimizing stockouts and excess inventory.
Sourcing & Procurement
Develop and manage a global sourcing strategy for raw materials, ingredients, and packaging. Build and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers, negotiate favorable contracts, and ensure a consistent supply of high-quality materials.
Manufacturing & Co-Packer Management
Oversee relationships with contract manufacturing partners. Ensure production schedules are met, quality standards are upheld, and operational efficiencies are continuously improved.
Inventory Optimization
Design and implement advanced inventory management strategies across the network to improve cash flow, reduce carrying costs, and increase inventory turns while maintaining high service levels.
Logistics & Distribution Network
Architect and manage a multi-channel distribution network, including direct-to-consumer (DTC) and retail. Oversee warehousing, transportation, and 3PL partner performance to ensure timely, accurate, and cost-effective delivery.
Technology & Systems Integration
Lead the evaluation, selection, and implementation of supply chain technologies (ERP, WMS, TMS) to improve visibility, automate processes, and enable data-driven decision-making.
Team Development & Leadership
Recruit, mentor, and lead a high-performing supply chain organization. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Set clear goals and provide regular feedback and development opportunities for your team.
Financial Acumen & Budget Management
Develop and manage the annual supply chain budget. Identify and execute cost-saving opportunities across the supply chain without compromising quality or service. Report on key performance indicators (KPIs) to the executive team.
Risk Management & Compliance
Proactively identify potential risks within the supply chain (e.g., supplier disruption, geopolitical issues, logistical bottlenecks) and develop robust mitigation plans. Ensure all operations comply with industry regulations and quality standards.
Requirements for the VP of Supply Chain – Pet Care Products
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, Engineering, or a related field is required. An MBA or other advanced degree is highly preferred.
Executive Experience
A minimum of 15 years of progressive experience in supply chain management, with at least 7 years in a senior leadership capacity (Director, Senior Director, or VP level).
Industry Expertise
Proven experience within the Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) industry is essential. Direct experience in pet care, food & beverage, or natural products is a significant advantage.
Strategic & Operational Balance
Demonstrated ability to operate at both a strategic and tactical level. A visionary leader who is not afraid to be hands-on to get the job done.
Proven Leadership
Track record of building, leading, and mentoring high-performing teams in a high-growth environment. Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
Technical Proficiency
Deep expertise in modern end-to-end supply chain management principles, including S&OP, demand forecasting, inventory management, and logistics. Extensive experience with ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite, SAP, Oracle) and other supply chain software.
Negotiation & Supplier Management
Masterful negotiation skills with a history of successfully managing complex supplier and 3PL relationships.
Analytical Mindset
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a data-driven approach to decision-making. Ability to translate complex data into actionable insights and strategic recommendations.
Certifications
Professional certifications such as Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP) or Certified in Production and Inventory Management (CPIM) from ASCM are highly desirable.
