Key Responsibilities of Controller (Manufacturing) – Salt Lake City
Financial Reporting & Analysis
Prepare and publish timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, ensuring accuracy and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Conduct comprehensive financial analysis, including variance analysis, trend analysis, and profitability studies, to provide insights to management.
Budgeting & Forecasting
Lead the annual budgeting process and develop rolling financial forecasts, collaborating with various departments to ensure alignment with strategic goals. Monitor budget performance, analyze deviations, and recommend corrective actions.
Cost Accounting & Inventory Management
Oversee all aspects of cost accounting, including standard costing, job costing, and activity-based costing. Analyze production costs, material usage, labor efficiency, and overhead absorption. Manage inventory valuation, obsolescence, and cycle counting processes to ensure accurate inventory reporting and minimize write-offs.
Internal Controls & Compliance
Develop, implement, and maintain robust internal controls over financial transactions and reporting to safeguard company assets and ensure data integrity. Ensure compliance with all local, state, and federal financial regulations and tax requirements. Coordinate and manage external audits.
Cash Flow Management
Monitor and manage daily cash flow, optimize working capital, and prepare cash flow forecasts to ensure adequate liquidity for operations and strategic initiatives.
Accounts Payable & Receivable
Supervise accounts payable and receivable functions, ensuring efficient processing, timely payments to vendors, and effective collection of receivables.
General Ledger Management
Oversee the general ledger, ensuring accurate and timely recording of all financial transactions, reconciliations, and month-end/year-end close processes.
Strategic Support
Provide financial guidance and support for strategic initiatives, capital expenditure decisions, pricing strategies, and new product development. Participate in operational reviews and identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvements.
Team Leadership & Development
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team. Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability, and professional growth within the finance department.
ERP System Management
Leverage and optimize the company’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system to enhance financial reporting, data analysis, and operational efficiency.
Requirements for the Controller (Manufacturing) – Salt Lake City
Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field is required. A Master’s degree (MBA) is a plus. A Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Management Accountant (CMA) designation is highly preferred.
Professional Experience
A minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in accounting and finance roles, with at least 3-5 years in a Controller or Assistant Controller position within a manufacturing environment. Experience with various manufacturing processes (e.g., discrete, process, lean manufacturing) is highly advantageous.
Technical Acumen
Deep understanding of GAAP and other relevant accounting principles. Extensive experience with cost accounting, inventory valuation methodologies, and manufacturing variance analysis.
System Proficiency
Advanced proficiency with ERP systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, NetSuite, Microsoft Dynamics) is essential. Strong command of Microsoft Excel for financial modeling, data analysis, and reporting.
Leadership & Management Skills
Proven ability to lead, motivate, and develop an accounting team. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders.
